Just as the title says.
Problem #1:
- Only the really rich people make political office. This means one of two things. Either you're going to get someone who was born rich and is completely out of touch with the normal American population, or you're going to get someone who's promised positions to donors in exchange for money. Either option is, in my opinion, completely unacceptable.
Problem #2:
- In all too many cases -- Congress, for example -- there are no term limits. We make a career out of being a politician. This means that politicians have to say whatever will get them the most votes, even if they don't really believe or intend what they're saying, or else they will lose their career.
Problem #3:
- This leads me to problem #3. We pay politicians to be politicians. Being a politician should be a necessary burden, like jury duty is. That was certainly what it was to George Washington, who didn't want to be a King and went back to being a farmer after he was through with the Presidency. This, I can almost guarantee you, is how the American political system was originally intended to be.
So, in summary:
- We vote for rich people who have usually become rich through familial or unethical means, put them into office with few term limits, and pay them lots of money to tell us whatever we want to hear. And we think this will work, because?
